Evesham & District Wheelers are proud to announce that the club has been awarded a £5000 Awards for All grant. The purpose of the grant is to encourage new talent to the club with a Youth Development programme with help from British Cycling's Go Ride Scheme. This Scheme will involve local Schools being offered cycle training and coaching with a view to encourage more youngsters in to the sport of cycling.
The Evesham based club was founded in
1947 and has achieved success in the past with young talented riders, but has
never been able to offer any structured coaching or significant support. Until
fairly recently the club has been languishing without any youth coming through
to continue in these successes.
Evesham Wheelers will now be able to offer coaching to these youngsters to encourage children to cycle and enjoy a healthy lifestyle, with the prospect of producing future champions. The Grant will also enable the club to purchase equipment for the benefit of younger members as they progress.
The club has two British Cycling trained Coaches- Paul Stockdale and Andrew Dolphin, who are also both keen racing cyclists.
Now for the first time in many years we have started to attract younger riders, who are showing great form and determination and achieving considerable success.
These successes do not come cheap, and despite the support of the riders' parents and our club, we were finding it increasingly difficult to meet the needs of these youngsters as they progress. Cycling is now becoming like football where specialised sponsored clubs are 'poaching' promising young riders from clubs like Evesham Wheelers and claiming the glory. With this Grant we will be able to kit our young riders out with a brand new club kit, provide coaching, help with travel costs and equipment. It will enable these existing riders and new members to achieve greater successes in the years to come, and hopefully catch the eye of national coaches.
We welcome any new members to join; there are NO membership fee's for under 18's. The club meets every Sunday Morning at 9.00am in Evesham High Street for a morning club run, and plan to have events for young riders through the Summer months.
