Sierra Navada Límite 2008
Mountain Bike Race, Spain

Race Start at the Sierra Navada Ski Centre
Report by Steve McGrath
Two members of the Evesham Wheelers, Andy Dolphin and Steve McGrath took on the Sierra Navada Límite on the 25th May 2008 in a group of four riding under the “Worcester Cycle Centre” name. Rising at 4.00 a.m. to make the 2 hour journey to join the start line at the Sierra Navada Ski Centre 2241m high where approximately 1000 riders were taking part. On route thunder clouds were evident as dawn broke, having rained heavily the night before. However, on reaching our destination the sun appeared although the snow peaked mountains were visible on the long steep drive to the Ski resort – a very cool 9ºC.
Having signed in, obtained our numbers and got ready for the off we found ourselves right at the back. However, we were hopeful that we could make up some time on the down hills as the Spanish were not as confident or adventurous! Most of the course was off road single track with a small amount of on road so not much opportunity to move up the field.

Andy, heading for the mountains
We dropped from 2241m to 715m where the temperature rose to around 29ºC in places. There were a number of food stations which were well equipped with various drinks and food to choose from. Any on road cycling was fully policed with spectators in the villages cheering on all that passed. The scenery was beautiful as we made our way along the course which unfortunately, was little comfort knowing that we had to make our way back up to the Ski station to the finish line. This started with a 6 km off road climb leading into a 10 km road climb to the finish where the temperature was still at 9ºC.

Steve
Triumphantly, all four completed the course in just over 8 hours, tired and exhausted but elated at achieving an awesome event that was excellently organised and would certainly recommend if in Spain on holiday!
